Include in menu

This item is normally ticked, and the page or folder will appear in your website's menu.

If "Include in menu" is not ticked the page will still be published, but the page or folder will not appear in the website's menu. This is useful for pages such as "terms & conditions", or "privacy policy" which often have a link in the foot of the page, but not in the menus.

This feature can also be used to "hide" pages that you do not want everyone to see. For example you may have a page that details wholesale prices, and you don't want everyone to see them. In cases such as this, un-tick "Include in menu", then emaila link to people that need access to this page.

Also see "Filename" below.

Menu text

This is the text that goes into your website's menu. To keep your pages looking uncluttered, we suggest you keep this fairly short, but without making it too cryptic. For example:"Contact" is fine, rather than "How to contact the global headquarters of XYZ Corporation"

Search engine tip

The website editor uses regular text links, which can be read by search engines. The text within links carries a high importance to search engines with regard to the target page. So try to include important keywords in the menu text.

Hover text
This is the text that pops up when you "hover" the mouse over the link text for a second or so. This can be a great help to your customers if it contains a brief description of the page.

The hover text should guide the user to exactly the pages they are looking for and save them wasted trips to pages that are not relevent to them. Use this feature wisely and your customers will thank you for it

File name

This item is optional. By default, the file name will be the menu text with spaces replaced by hyphens and ending with ".htm".

Example:
Menu text: Contact Us
Automatically generated file name: www.yourdomain.co.uk/contact-us.htm

If you change the menu text you will therefore also change the file name. If a user clicks on a search engine entry to a page that has since changed it's file name, the user will get a "page not found" error.

We recommend that you set a file name when you create a page, and then avoid changing it too often. You can then change the menu text as often as you wish, and the file name will remain unchanged.

Search engine tip

If you are keen to get search engine results, we suggest using natural words in the file name that users may type into search engines. Separate the words with hyphens. Avoid making the file name too long. Words in the file name will then be read by search engines and will help to improve the page's ranking for those keywords.

Example:
Menu text: Jobs
You enter the file name: hotel-leisure-jobs-uk

Page title
This is the text that appears in the top left corner of your browser. It is also used to provide the text when a user adds your page to their "favourites". For this reason, we suggest using your company name or product plus the page description. You could also incorporate a sales slogan. Remember, this is what your visitors will see when they find your website in their favourites, so give them a reason to come back!

Examples:
"XYZ Ltd - Contact"
"Cheaper DVD's - choose a movie"

Meta tags
These are invisible to your visitors but can sometimes be useful to search engines.

Description
This meta tag is sometimes used by search engines to provide a short description of your web page. Make sure that the description says who you are and what you do in a few well chosen words.

Example:
"Eddy's Ornaments provide bring interest to your garden. Free home delivery within the Borsetshire area.

Keywords
This meta tag is often used to help determine how your page should be indexed by the search engines. It is important to keep the keywords relevent to your website and to avoid repeating keywords in the hope of a higher ranking. Search engines have different rules, but they will often reject websites where there are too many keywords or the keywords are repeated too often.

Example:
"ambridge, borsetshire, eddy's ornaments, garden ornaments
