Track results of your online advertising

If you are advertising your website on Google or other online media it is a good idea to be able to track the number of visitors from each of your adverts.

This means that you don't have to take the advertisers word for how much traffic they are generating for you, and it means that you can see which of your adverts is most popular.

Add a querystring to your URL

Sounds complicated but it's really very simple. You just need to add "/?" and some text after your URL in the advert. See below for an example of how this is done with Google adwords.

The bit after the "?" is called the querystring (in the example this is Google_01). When you view your website visitor statistics you will see a section called Querystrings. This will list how many visitors have followed links with each querystring. Give each advert a different querystring and you will quickly see which adverts are working for you.
